Empowering Futures: Support Education for Over 30 Children in Mathare Slum Through Wanted Alive
In the Mathare slum of Nairobi, Kenya—one of the city's most densely populated informal settlements, home to an estimated 500,000 to 800,000 residents—children face profound educational barriers amid extreme poverty, with approximately 1.5 million school-aged children nationwide remaining out of school due to inability to afford essentials like uniforms, books, and fees. In Mathare specifically, severely limited public infrastructure—such as only a few schools serving tens of thousands of students—compounds these challenges, resulting in high dropout rates, overcrowded classrooms, and vulnerability to exploitation, child labor, early marriage, and crime, while nine in ten children from poor households fail to complete eighth grade. These obstacles perpetuate intergenerational cycles of deprivation, restricting access to opportunities and fostering diminished economic prospects. However, through the committed work of Wanted Alive, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting vulnerable families and education in areas like the Mathare slums, meaningful intervention is possible.
More than 30 children presently depend on Wanted Alive for their critical school fees, A collective contribution of $3,500 to $4,000 would ensure their continued enrollment, equipping them with essential knowledge, resilience, and pathways to independence. Your support can profoundly alter these young lives, breaking the hold of poverty and empowering them to build sustainable futures for themselves and their communities—please consider donating today to facilitate this vital change.
This amount breaks down to less than $150 per child and includes their uniforms and school lunches; for the older children it is full education and room and board for the year.
So far, we have only had one sponsor this year for one child's education. Be number 2 😊 or #30. If 30 people donated $130 each we would meet our goal. Or if 160 people donate as little as $25 the goal would be met.
You can confidently donate to Wanted Alive knowing that through the committed work of Wanted Alive—a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization where the President and Vice President receive no salaries, ensuring that donations directly benefit those in need—meaningful intervention is possible.
The profound joy experienced by these children upon gaining access to education is truly inspiring and contagious.
Equally palpable is the deep sorrow and despair—particularly among the teenagers—at the prospect of being denied schooling. One of our boys felt so overwhelmed that he believed stepping in front of a moving vehicle would be preferable to being turned away due to financial constraints.
Fortunately, a valued partner organization intervened promptly, enabling us to enroll the children for the first term. This timely support allowed the boy in question to commence his studies on January 6th, and he is now filled with rejoicing.
We invite you to join our efforts in creating transformative and life-saving impacts for these young lives.
